Lafayette, the first foreign-born general to command forces in the American Revolution, was invited by President James Monroe to do a grand tour of the U.S. It would be Lafayette's "farewell tour" of a country he admired so dearly. He traveled to 24 states and was besieged by adoring crowds, serenaded and generally treated like a celebrity — all because of what he did for our fledgling country.
