During the era of Prohibition in the United States the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol was illegal. Despite this, the demand for alcohol remained high, and many individuals turned to bootlegging as a means of making money. Female bootleggers were not uncommon, and in fact outnumbered male bootleggers. Many of them were skilled at smuggling alcohol into the city and distributing it to speakeasies and other illicit establishments. Historian Sally Asher will be on hand to discuss these "snake charmers" and will feature readings by actors to bring these stories to life.
