Overview

The Old State Capitol announces the opening of a year-long exhibit, "Remembering the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition," taking visitors on a nostalgic journey through time. This exhibit opens on January 23 and promises to transport guests back to the atmosphere of the World's Fair held in New Orleans 40 years ago.

The 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, a momentous event in the city's history, marked the centennial celebration of the World Cotton Centennial Fair in 1884. With its grand opening on Saturday, May 12, 1984, and a six-month run concluding on Sunday, November 11, 1984, the fair left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of New Orleans.

Themed "The World of Rivers—Fresh Waters as a Source of Life," the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition showcased the convergence of global cultures and the importance of fresh waters in sustaining life. Now, at the Old State Capitol, this unique exhibit will bring the memories of the fair back to life.

Visitors can expect to be immersed in the sights, sounds, and stories that defined the fair. From iconic pavilions to groundbreaking exhibits, the "Remembering the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition" exhibit will feature artifacts, photographs, and videos that capture the spirit of that remarkable event.

The Old State Capitol invites everyone to join us, as we commemorate the legacy of the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Programs held in conjunction with this exhibit will be announced at later dates.
